Star Psalm. A Psalm of Civilization 1
The stars do sing!
Gather ye together, oh people, and listen
Listen!
Stars which have sung the dreams of God
Of a slow and dawning tenderness
Cradling the many worlds
Behold ye, oh humanity!
And have you numbered your purpose in the universe?
Have you consulted with the Earth?
Have you gazed up to see your meaning written amid the skyswept sparkling
Of the billion galaxies?
Amid your wars, poverty, and disease
You will never know the numbering of purpose
For who, seeking life, looks to death?
Who, seeking reason, looks to contradiction?
Who, seeking vision, looks away and not toward?
Hear ye, you people
Intelligence before the surging vastness of All Things
Hear the brightful babblings of the rain-fed brook
Feel summer velvet air on some moonless night
Watch your children hoe the peppers, and
Always always
Know and touch with thought
Your gentle primate heart
And notice, only creature, notice!
Benevolence widen to embrace the Universe
Kindness become the cloth of creation
